Parenting on an Equal Basis
Seattle, Washington, Parenting Plan Attorneys
50-50 parenting plans are gaining in popularity in Washington State and throughout the country. Under a 50-50 parenting arrangement, each parent spends approximately half of their time with the child.
The trend toward equal visitation and 50-50 parenting plans is also reflected in our practice here at Engel Law Group. If you would like to learn more about equal custody and visitation arrangements — we encourage you to call us at 206.625.9800 or to contact us online for a free consultation.
The Positives of Shared Parenting
A number of recent studies of joint custody and equal visitation arrangements suggest that 50-50 parenting plans can be a more effective way to raise children. In fact, findings have shown that children with equal visitation/parenting time arrangements often:
- Feel more secure in their relationships with both parents
- Go through fewer and less severe adjustment problems after the divorce
- Have better self-esteem
- Do better in school
- Experience fewer health problems
Other benefits include the money saved by avoiding litigation, reduced conflict between the parents themselves, and research showing that fathers who have equal parenting arrangements are more likely to pay their support obligations.
How Can You Get a 50-50 Parenting Plan?
The easiest way to get a 50-50 parenting plan is by mutual consent of both parties. If you and your spouse cannot agree on a 50-50 parenting plan, then it is likely you will have to go to court to get it.
When asked by a parent for a 50-50 parenting plan, the "best interest of the child" will always be the court's overriding concern. However, the court is guided by several factors, as outlined in the original statute (RCW 26.09.187), in making their decision. Of those factors, parenting history can become very important to a court's decision on implementing a 50-50 parenting plan, especially if the parties do not agree and litigation is expected.
